Justice Bhushan Ramakrishnan Gavai was sworn in as the 52nd Chief Justice of India (CJI) on May 10, 2023. President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Justice Gavai succeeds Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna, who retired on May 13. Gavai will serve as CJI until November 23, 2025. Born in Amravati, Maharashtra, on November 24, 1960, he was appointed as an additional judge to the Bombay High Court in 2003 and became a permanent judge in 2005. As CJI, Gavai will head the Supreme Court, ensuring the administration of justice, overseeing judicial processes, and upholding constitutional values. His elevation also marks the reintroduction of Scheduled Caste representation in the Supreme Court after a decade.
