A minor girl who was raped in Muzaffarpur, Bihar, succumbed to her injuries at Patna Medical College Hospital (PMCH) on Sunday morning. The girl's family alleged that she was made to wait in an ambulance for hours before being admitted to the hospital, which they claim contributed to her death.
The Incident
The minor girl was raped on May 26 in her village in Muzaffarpur. The accused, Rohit Kumar Sahni, allegedly lured her away from her home with the promise of Kurkure and chocolate. He then took her to an isolated spot near a pond, where he raped her, slit her throat, and stabbed her with a knife. The girl was found lying near the pond at around 7 pm that evening.
Delayed Treatment
The girl's family claimed that she was brought to PMCH on Saturday, but was forced to wait in an ambulance for hours due to the unavailability of a hospital bed. According to the family, the hospital staff directed them to different wards, and it was only after some politicians intervened that she was finally admitted at around 5 pm on Saturday.
Hospital's Response
However, PMCH authorities denied these allegations, stating that the hospital administration acted swiftly after the case came to their notice. According to PMCH Medical Superintendent Dr. Indrashekhar Thakur, the girl was brought to the central emergency unit at 1:23 pm on Saturday, and doctors examined her in the advanced life support ambulance itself. He added that every effort was made to treat her, but unfortunately, she passed away around 8:15 am on Sunday.
Congress Protests
The incident has sparked outrage, with Congress leaders accusing the Nitish government of being insensitive. Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi condemned the incident, saying, "The brutality against a minor Dalit girl in Muzaffarpur and the subsequent negligence in her treatment is extremely shameful." Congress workers also staged protests across the state, demanding justice for the victim and resignation of state Health Minister Mangal Pandey.
Investigation and Arrest
The accused, Rohit Kumar Sahni, was arrested the same night by Muzaffarpur Rural Superintendent of Police Vidya Sagar. According to the police, the accused has a history of such behavior and a habitual tendency to harass girls. The police also found that he made social media reels to attract young girls .
