India is experiencing a renewed wave of COVID-19 cases, with fresh concerns emerging about the evolving symptoms and impact on public health. Health officials are closely monitoring the uptick in daily COVID-19 cases, urging people to stay vigilant and follow safety guidelines as the virus continues to spread across various states.

What's New This Week Statewise Highlights (As of June 6, 2025) : India is currently experiencing a varied surge in active COVID-19 cases, with Kerala leading the spike at 1,679 active cases and two deaths. In Delhi, the situation remains concerning with 592 active cases and seven deaths, including an infant, while Karnataka has reported 451 active cases and seven deaths. West Bengal is also seeing an uptick, registering 596 active cases and one death. Maharashtra reported 548 active cases and 17 deaths, marking a significant impact. Gujarat, too, has seen a notable rise, with 615 active cases and two deaths. Tamil Nadu has 221 active cases and four deaths. Elsewhere, states like Haryana, Odisha, and Chhattisgarh have reported smaller but noticeable increases in active cases, although no fatalities have been confirmed in these regions so far.

Symptoms Reported This Week This week, the most commonly reported symptoms have included dry cough, fever, nasal congestion, sore throat, and body aches. Emerging symptoms, such as mild gastrointestinal issues like diarrhoea, have been observed in around 30% of new cases. Interestingly, the loss of taste or smell, which was more prominent in earlier waves, is now less common. New COVID-19 :India Sees a Spike, UK Flags XEC VariantJN.1 (Omicron Subvariant) The most dominant strain in India, responsible for over 50% of current infections. It’s highly contagious but causes mild to moderate symptoms. Listed by WHO as a Variant of Interest (VOI) with no sign of increased severity. • NB.1.8.1 Recently detected in Tamil Nadu, this subvariant is under WHO’s Variant Under Monitoring (VUM) list. It may evade immunity, but there's no rise in serious illness or spread so far. • LF.7 Spotted in Gujarat, LF.7 is also being monitored for its immune escape potential. So far, there’s no evidence of severe infections or hospital surges linked to it. • XEC (UK Variant) First reported in Germany, now detected in 29 countries, including the UK. Makes up: 10% of infections in England, ,11% in Scotland, 13% in Wales, 24% in Northern Ireland. Mild symptoms, no increase in severity, but rising hospitalizations in vulnerable groups. UK NHS urges booster shots, especially for the elderly and immunocompromised. Health officials urge masking, testing, and vaccination amid fears of a new wave.
