On June 6, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the Chenab Bridge, the world's highest railway bridge, in Jammu and Kashmir's Reasi district. This engineering marvel stands at a height of 359 meters (1,178 feet) above the Chenab River, surpassing the Eiffel Tower by 35 meters. the bridge is a pivotal component of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Railway Link (USBRL) project, aimed at enhancing connectivity in the region. Engineering Marvel: Design and Construction the Chenab Bridge is a steel arch bridge with a total length of 1,315 meters (4,314 feet) and a main arch span of 467 meters (1,532 feet). Its construction involved the use of 30,000 metric tons of special steel and cost approximately ₹15,000 crore. the bridge is designed to withstand earthquakes up to magnitude 8 and high-intensity blasts, with an expected lifespan of 120 years. Historical Context: A 22-Year Journey the project was approved in 2003, with construction commencing in 2004. Despite facing challenges such as complex geology, harsh weather, and security concerns, the bridge's main arch was completed in April 2021. the first trial run of a full electric train was conducted on June 20, 2024. Strategic Significance: Bridging Kashmir the Chenab Bridge is part of the USBRL project, which aims to connect the Kashmir Valley with the rest of India by rail for the first time.
