A money scam has left renowned TV actors Kunal Verma and Pooja Banerjee in shock after losing their life savings. The duo, who have worked in several Indian daily soaps, were swindled by an investment plan at the beginning of the year. The scheme, organised by an agent in Mumbai, guaranteed good returns and long-term financial growth. But after having faith in the scheme for months, the duo realised they had been cheated. The gruesome disclosure surfaced in early June 2025, when the agent ceased communicating and went silent on all fronts.

The agent, according to Kunal Verma, posed as a genuine financial advisor who had asserted connections to major banks and national investment houses. The couple was convinced by him to proceed with an aggressive investment strategy that promised over-market returns. The papers that were handed over seemed authentic, and the scam had all the features of an approved financial product. Trusting his professional tone and copious promises, the couple invested their entire savings money saved up over ten years of work in television in the scheme.

Speaking to ETimes, Kunal said, “We felt betrayed and helpless. It wasn’t just about the money, it was about our future, our daughter’s future.” Pooja Banerjee added, “We were careful with our earnings, and to lose everything in one stroke has shaken us to the core.” The couple emphasised that while they are emotionally and financially drained, they hope their experience serves as a warning to others. We never believed this would happen to us, and now we would like people to double-check before putting their money in anyone's hands.

An FIR has been registered at Oshiwara Police Station, Mumbai. Officials confirmed that the accused is absconding and has been charged under IPC Sections 406, 420, and 468 for cheating, fraud, and forgery. A senior police official, speaking to The Indian Express, stated that other victims have started coming forward, indicating this may be part of a bigger con operation. The financial fraud and cybercrime cell are working together to trace the agent's electronic trail and financial transactions.
/*Industry Support and Call for Financial Vigilance*/
As the news broke, celebrities from the Indian television industry rallied around the couple. Actors including Arjun Bijlani, Anita Hassanandani, and Shweta Tiwari posted messages of support, offering both emotional and professional help. Financial advisors have also chimed in, urging the public to avoid making investments without proper verification of credentials, SEBI registration, and due diligence. Kunal and Pooja plan to launch a public awareness campaign through their social media channels to spread financial literacy and help others avoid similar scams.
