A Punjab court in Mohali sentenced self-proclaimed Christian pastor Bajinder Singh to life imprisonment on Tuesday in a 2018 rape case. The verdict was delivered by Additional District and Sessions Judge, Vikrant Kumar, on March 28, after finding Singh guilty under sections 376 (rape), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
Singh, who is known as the ‘Yeshu Yeshu prophet,’ was convicted for sexually assaulting a woman from Zirakpur. The court acquitted the other accused individuals—Akbar Bhatti, Rajesh Chaudhary, Jatinder Kumar, Sitar Ali, and Sandeep alias Pehlwan—due to insufficient evidence. Another accused, Sucha Singh, passed away during the trial.
The case stemmed from a complaint filed by the victim with the Zirakpur police, which led to charges being registered against Bajinder Singh and six others under various sections of the IPC, including 376 (rape), 420 (cheating), 354 (assault or criminal force to woman), 294 (obscene acts), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 506 (criminal intimidation), 148 (rioting), and 149 (unlawful assembly).
Despite supporters of Pastor Bajinder gathering outside the court, police restricted their entry into the complex.
